Background
Helen has been a member of our John M Hayes Amersham team since 1992 and has 24 years solid costing experience. Helen studied at Bucks College of Higher Education where she achieved a BSc (Hons) in Sociology.
Tell us how you came to work in legal costs?
Well that is an interesting question. I was just about to finish and leave college when I met John Hayes at a labour party meeting. John had suggested that I send in my CV, which I did and they subsequently offered me a costs drafting position in the company. That’s how I got into costing, by chance and I have never looked back.
Tell us what you do at John M Hayes?
Over the years I have built up experience and now I focus on the more challenging areas of publicly funded work which included high costs case plans, events case plans and mental case plans. I am also experienced and undertake Court of Protection work and prepare Bills of Costs in inter partes mental health cases.
How has the role of a Costs Professional changed during your time with John M Hayes?
The role of a costs professional has changed dramatically over the 24 years that I have worked for John M Hayes. When I first started we were still dictating and handwriting bills!
The advent of CCMS means that I am much more involved with technology and I have had a steep learning curve with the use of computers over the years.
Another notable change is the fact that we are on whole more involved in the costing process from advice, preparation of the claims/bills right up to post assessment and that it is more reliant on dialogue and relationships between the costs draftsman and the fee earner.
What do you love about working in costs?
I love the variety of work on offer that the costing industry provides as it is very rarely boring, every case is different and no two days are the same. It also allows you to see quite an interesting side to life and appreciate how others’ lives. I also love the interaction with other professionals and solicitors and helping make a difference to our clients.
What has been the highlight of your career to date?
I could not single out one specific highlight, however it is always satisfying and rewarding when you accomplish the odd victory against the Legal Aid Agency or when you get a case plan agreed the first time.
What would your dream job be?
Well if I wasn’t working for John M Hayes, I would love to be a chocolate taster or to run and own a cat café.
What keeps you busy outside the office?
Outside of work, I am very family orientated and they keep me busy. I am also interested in vegetarian issues, baking, reading and ensuring my two cats are kept happy.
