CAFCASS report increase in cases since introduction of LASPO
During the campaigns against LASPO it was highlighted that Courts could potentially be placed under increased strain as a result of the reforms. The reasoning behind this prediction was that firstly there would be a likely rise in litigants in person resulting in more drawn out cases and secondly there would no longer be legal help available which often allowed disputes to be settled without the need for court proceedings in the first place.
So what have we seen so far? Interesting data has been released by CAFCASS that shows that in May 2013 they received a 5061 private law cases, their highest month on record. Between April and May (since LASPO was introduced) the total is 7388 which represents a 27% increase on the same period in the previous year.
It is early days to know whether this is the start of a trend or not, but the signs don’t look good!
